Rat Home Remedies: Do They Actually Work?

Honest advice on common DIY remedies, what helps a little, what fails, and when professional treatment is the better option.

The Truth About Rat Home Remedies

When you discover rats in your home, it is natural to look for a quick, cheap solution. The internet is full of suggestions — peppermint oil, ultrasonic devices, mothballs, bleach, and more. But do any of them actually work?

The honest answer: most rat home remedies are either completely ineffective or, at best, offer very temporary and very limited results. Rats are intelligent, highly adaptable animals that have lived alongside humans for thousands of years. They are not easily deterred by smells or sounds.

Peppermint Oil

The claim: Rats dislike the smell of peppermint oil. Soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them around entry points to repel rats.

The reality: There is no scientific evidence that peppermint oil repels rats in any meaningful way. While rats may initially investigate a new strong smell, they quickly habituate to it. Peppermint oil evaporates within hours, and even at full strength, it does not override a rat's motivation to reach food and shelter.

Verdict: Does not work. At best, a temporary mild deterrent that rats ignore within a day or two.

Ultrasonic Repellers

The claim: Electronic devices that emit high-frequency sound waves create an environment that is intolerable for rats, driving them away.

The reality: Multiple independent studies — including research by the British Pest Control Association — have found that ultrasonic devices have no meaningful effect on rodent behaviour. Rats may initially react to a new sound but quickly habituate. The sound does not penetrate walls or furniture, severely limiting its range even in theory.

Verdict: Does not work. These devices are a waste of money for rat control.

Mothballs

The claim: The strong chemical smell of mothballs (naphthalene) repels rats from enclosed spaces.

The reality: Mothballs do produce a strong odour, but the concentration needed to deter rats would be dangerously high for humans and pets. At normal usage levels, rats ignore them. Mothballs are also toxic — they release harmful vapours and are a poisoning risk for children and pets.

Verdict: Does not work and poses a health risk. Do not use mothballs for rat control.

Snap Traps

The claim: Traditional snap traps kill rats instantly and effectively.

The reality: Snap traps are the most effective DIY method and the one we actually recommend for minor problems (one or two rats). They are inexpensive, humane when used correctly, and produce immediate results.

For best results, use multiple traps placed along walls where you have found droppings or grease marks. Place them perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end closest to it. Use peanut butter, chocolate spread, or bacon as bait.

Verdict: Works for minor problems. Not sufficient for established infestations where multiple rats are present.

Ammonia and Bleach

The claim: Strong chemical smells deter rats from nesting in treated areas.

The reality: Like peppermint oil, rats habituate quickly to chemical smells. More importantly, using ammonia or bleach in enclosed spaces (under floors, in wall cavities, in loft spaces) creates a health hazard for you and your family. Never mix ammonia and bleach — the combination produces toxic chloramine gas.

Verdict: Does not work and is dangerous. Do not use household chemicals as rodent deterrents.

What Actually Works

Effective rat control comes down to three things: removing food sources, sealing entry points, and targeted treatment (traps or professional rodenticides).

 • Seal all gaps larger than 15mm with wire wool and cement — this is the most impactful step you can take. See our rat prevention guide for details.
 • Remove food sources — secure bins, store food in sealed containers, clear up fallen bird seed and fruit.
 • Use snap traps for minor problems — place multiple traps along known runs.
 • For established infestations, professional rat control is the only reliable solution. Contact BuzzKill for a free assessment.
