How to Get Rid of Rats in Your Home

Expert UK guide — identification, DIY methods, professional treatment, and prevention tips.

Why Rats Are a Serious Problem in UK Homes

Rats are one of the most common pest problems in the UK, particularly in urban areas across London and Essex. Brown rats (Rattus norvegicus) are the species you are most likely to encounter, and they pose real risks to health, property, and peace of mind.

Rats can carry diseases such as leptospirosis (Weil's disease), salmonella, and E. coli. They contaminate food stores, gnaw through electrical wiring — creating fire risks — and cause structural damage by burrowing under foundations and through walls.

A single pair of rats can produce up to 200 offspring in a year under ideal conditions. That means a small problem can become a serious infestation in a matter of weeks if left untreated.

How to Identify a Rat Problem

Before you can deal with rats, you need to confirm they are the issue. Rats leave clear evidence of their presence if you know where to look.

  • Droppings — dark, pellet-shaped, roughly 10–14mm long. Often found along walls, behind appliances, and in loft spaces.
  • Gnaw marks — on wood, plastic, cables, and food packaging. Fresh marks are lighter in colour.
  • Grease marks — dark smears along walls and skirting boards from the oil in rat fur.
  • Scratching noises — especially at night, in walls, ceilings, and under floors.
  • Burrow holes — around 6–9cm wide, typically near foundations, sheds, compost bins, or decking.
  • Nests — shredded paper, fabric, or insulation gathered in hidden, sheltered spots.

DIY Methods: What You Can Try First

For a minor problem — perhaps one or two rats spotted — there are some steps you can take yourself before calling a professional.

Snap traps are the most effective DIY method. Place them along walls where you have seen droppings or grease marks, using peanut butter or chocolate as bait. Always position traps perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end closest to it.

Seal entry points using wire wool packed into gaps and finished with cement or caulk. Rats can squeeze through a hole the size of a 50p coin, so check around pipes, vents, doors, and where cables enter the building.

Remove food sources by storing all food in sealed containers, cleaning up spillages immediately, keeping bins secured with tight lids, and not leaving pet food out overnight.

Over-the-counter rodenticide is available, but we do not recommend using poison without professional guidance. Incorrect use risks secondary poisoning of pets and wildlife, and a rat that dies inside a wall cavity will cause a severe smell problem.

When to Call a Professional

DIY methods have their limits. If you are seeing rats regularly, hearing activity in multiple areas of the building, or finding large quantities of droppings, you are likely dealing with an established colony that needs professional treatment.

A qualified rat control technician will carry out a full survey, identify entry points, set up a targeted treatment plan using professional-grade rodenticides or traps, and return for follow-up visits to confirm the problem is resolved.

At BuzzKill, our technicians are NPTA registered and BASIS PROMPT certified. We use tamper-resistant bait stations that are safe around children and pets, and we include proofing recommendations as part of every treatment.

How Professional Rat Treatment Works

A professional treatment typically follows three stages.

  • Survey — a full inspection of the property to assess the scale of the infestation, identify entry points, and locate harbourage areas.
  • Treatment — placement of locked bait stations or traps in targeted locations. The technician will explain the treatment plan and any safety precautions.
  • Follow-up — return visits (usually 2–3) to monitor bait take, replenish stations, and confirm the infestation has been fully resolved. Proofing advice is provided to prevent re-entry.

Preventing Rats from Coming Back

Treatment alone is not enough. Without addressing the conditions that attracted rats in the first place, they will return. Prevention is a critical part of any rat control programme.

  • Seal all gaps larger than 15mm around pipes, vents, doors, and cable entry points.
  • Keep gardens tidy — cut back overgrown vegetation, remove rubbish, and do not compost cooked food.
  • Store refuse in bins with secure lids and do not leave bin bags on the ground overnight.
  • Fix dripping taps and leaking pipes — rats need a daily water source.
  • If you have a bird feeder, use a squirrel-proof model and clean up fallen seed regularly.
  • Check your property annually for new gaps or damage that could allow re-entry.

How Much Does Rat Control Cost?

Professional rat control in London and Essex typically starts from around £95 for a standard treatment course. The exact cost depends on the size of the property, the severity of the infestation, and how many follow-up visits are needed.
