How Rats Use Your Home

Brown rats are creatures of habit. Once they establish routes, they use them repeatedly, leaving grease marks, droppings, and gnaw damage along the way.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the most common area for rat activity because it provides food and water. Rats access kitchens via gaps around pipes under the sink, through wall cavities behind units, and from underneath via the floor void.

• Check behind and under the fridge, oven, and dishwasher for droppings and gnaw marks.
• Inspect under the sink — gaps around waste pipes and water supply pipes are primary entry points.
• Look inside base unit kick plates — remove them and check the floor and wall behind.
• Check food cupboards for gnawed packaging, droppings, and contamination.
• Before treatment: store all food in sealed containers, clean behind appliances, and clear under the sink.

Loft and Roof Space

Lofts are a very common harbourage for rats. They enter via the roofline (damaged tiles, gaps in soffits), climb up through wall cavities, or access from neighbouring properties in terraced or semi-detached houses.

• Check loft insulation for tunnelling, droppings, and nesting material.
• Inspect around the water tank (if present) — rats are attracted to the water source.
• Look for gnaw damage on stored items, electrical cables, and pipework.

Bathroom and Utility Room

Rats can enter bathrooms via the drainage system — they are strong swimmers and can navigate U-bends. Gaps around soil pipes, bath panels, and boxing around pipework also provide access.

• Check around the toilet base — ensure the seal to the soil pipe is intact.
• Remove bath panels and inspect the space behind for droppings, gnaw marks, and entry points.
• Inspect around boxing and pipework for gaps.
• Listen for scratching sounds from within the walls — bathrooms often have cavity walls with pipe runs.

Living Areas and Bedrooms

Rats occasionally access living rooms and bedrooms via wall cavities, under floorboards, or through gaps around radiator pipes and cable entry points.

Finding droppings in living areas typically indicates a well-established infestation — rats prefer to stay close to food sources and will only spread further when the population grows. Check behind radiators, along skirting boards, under furniture, and around any pipe or cable penetrations in the walls.

Garden, Garage, and Outbuildings

Many rat problems begin outdoors before they move indoors. Gardens, garages, and sheds often provide the initial harbourage.

• Look for burrow holes (6–9cm diameter) near foundations, under sheds, alongside paths, and near compost bins.
• Check around decking — the sheltered space underneath is a prime nesting site.
• Inspect garage and shed walls for gnaw marks and droppings.
• Check drain covers and manhole lids for displacement or damage.
