Safe Bee Relocation in Charlton
Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem, but when they nest in wall cavities, chimneys, or near entryways in Charlton, they can pose a significant stinging risk to your family and pets.
At BuzzKill Pest Control, we are committed to the ethical treatment of bees. In Charlton, we will always prioritize safe extraction and relocation to a local beekeeper whenever possible. Treatment is only ever considered as an absolute last resort when the nest poses an immediate danger and cannot be safely accessed. For urgent situations where a nest poses a stinging risk, our emergency pest control team can attend at short notice.
We Do Not Treat Honeybees
BuzzKill Pest Control does not kill or treat honeybee colonies. Honeybees are essential pollinators responsible for pollinating approximately one-third of the food we eat. UK honeybee populations have declined significantly in recent decades due to habitat loss, pesticides, disease, and climate change. Killing a honeybee colony is ecologically irresponsible and almost never necessary.
If you have honeybees on your property — whether a swarm resting on a fence or tree, or an established colony inside a wall cavity or chimney — the first step is always to contact a local beekeeper. Beekeepers will often collect swarms free of charge and can advise on established colonies. We will only consider treatment as an absolute last resort where the colony poses an immediate danger to life (for example, a colony above a school entrance where a child has a known severe allergy) and cannot be safely relocated.
If you are unsure whether you have honeybees, bumblebees, or wasps, we are happy to identify the species for you and advise on the best course of action.
Types of Bees You May Encounter
Not all bees are the same, and most do not require any intervention at all.
- Honeybees (Apis mellifera) — Golden-brown with darker banding, 12 to 15mm. Live in large colonies of 20,000 to 60,000. Build wax honeycomb nests in cavities. Swarm in spring. Contact a beekeeper for removal.
- Bumblebees (Bombus spp.) — Large, round, and very furry. Black with yellow, orange, or white bands depending on species. Small colonies of 50 to 400 in underground burrows, bird boxes, and compost heaps. Very docile — rarely sting. Leave them alone; the colony dies naturally in autumn.
- Masonry bees / solitary bees — Small bees that nest individually in holes in mortar, wood, and soil. They do not form colonies, do not swarm, and very rarely sting. They cause minimal damage to mortar and are harmless. No treatment needed.
- Mining bees — Solitary bees that nest in small holes in lawns and flower beds, often in groups. They create small volcano-shaped mounds of excavated soil. Completely harmless. No treatment needed — they are active for only 4 to 6 weeks in spring.
What to Do If You Have a Bee Swarm
A swarm of honeybees — a large cluster of thousands of bees hanging from a branch, fence, wall, or post — looks alarming but is actually one of the safest encounters with bees. Swarming bees are focused on finding a new home and are very unlikely to sting.
- Do not panic, spray, or throw anything at the swarm.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance as a precaution.
- Contact a local beekeeper — most will collect a swarm free of charge. Use the links below to find one near you.
- If the swarm is in a difficult location (high up, inside a wall), call us for advice — we can assess whether it can be safely relocated.
