Signs of Mice: How to Tell If You Have an Infestation

The early warning signs, where to look, and how to tell a minor problem from a serious infestation.

How to Tell If You Have Mice

Mice are small, quiet, and mostly nocturnal — which means they can live in your home for weeks before you realise they are there. A single mouse leaves behind enough evidence to detect, but only if you know where to look.

The house mouse (Mus musculus) is the species found in almost all UK domestic infestations. They are curious, agile, and remarkably adaptable — living in wall cavities, under kitchen units, in loft insulation, and anywhere they can find warmth and food nearby.

Mouse Droppings

Droppings are the most reliable indicator of mouse activity. Mouse droppings are small (3–8mm), dark, and roughly the shape of a grain of rice — but much smaller than rat droppings.

A single mouse produces 50–80 droppings per day. Check inside kitchen cupboards, behind the fridge and oven, under the sink, along skirting boards, and in any seldom-opened drawers or storage areas.

Fresh droppings are soft, dark, and shiny. Older droppings are dry and crumbly. Finding both fresh and old droppings together suggests an ongoing, active infestation.

Scratching Noises

Light scratching, scurrying, or rustling noises in walls, under floors, or in the ceiling — particularly at night — are a classic sign of mice. The sounds are lighter and faster than those made by rats.

Mice are excellent climbers and can easily travel vertically through cavity walls. Hearing scratching in an upstairs wall does not mean they entered at that level — they may have come in at ground level and climbed up through the wall cavity.

Gnaw Marks

Like all rodents, mice gnaw continuously. Look for small, neat gnaw marks on food packaging, cereal boxes, plastic containers, wood, skirting boards, and electrical cables.

Mouse gnaw marks are noticeably smaller and finer than rat marks. Damaged food packaging is one of the earliest signs people notice — often before they find droppings.

Smear Marks and Urine Trails

Mice tend to follow the same routes repeatedly, leaving grease marks from their fur along walls and edges. These are usually subtler than rat smear marks, but visible on light surfaces with close inspection.

In heavier infestations, you may notice a distinct ammonia-like smell — this is from mouse urine. Mice urinate frequently as they travel, and the odour becomes more noticeable as the infestation grows.

Nests and Nesting Material

Mice build nests from shredded materials — paper, cardboard, fabric, loft insulation, and anything soft they can find. Nests are usually in warm, hidden, undisturbed spots: inside wall cavities, behind appliances, in loft insulation, under bath panels, and inside stored boxes.

Finding shredded material in unusual places — for example, chewed paper in the back of a kitchen drawer or disturbed insulation in the loft — is a strong sign of nesting.

Where to Check for Mice

Mice do not travel far from their nest — typically within 3–10 metres. Focus your inspection on these areas:

  • Behind and under the fridge, oven, and dishwasher.
  • Inside kitchen cupboards, especially at the back and along pipe entry points.
  • Under the kitchen and bathroom sinks — check around pipework for gaps.
  • Airing cupboards and boiler cupboards — mice love the warmth.
  • Loft spaces — check insulation for tunnelling and droppings.
  • Garages and utility rooms — especially near stored food or pet food bags.

When to Get a Professional Inspection

If you are finding droppings in multiple areas, hearing regular scratching, or your traps are not catching, it is time to call a professional. A single visible mouse often means several more you cannot see.

A professional mouse control service will identify how mice are entering, treat the problem effectively, and provide proofing advice to prevent them from coming back. At BuzzKill, inspections are free with no obligation. Book yours today.
