Cockroach Control for Homes: A Room-by-Room Guide

Where cockroaches hide around the home, what to inspect, and how treatment and aftercare should be handled.

How Cockroaches Occupy a Home

Cockroaches harbour in warm, moist, dark spaces close to food and water. In UK homes, this means the kitchen is almost always the epicentre — but bathrooms, boiler cupboards, and adjacent rooms can also be affected.

German cockroaches (the most common species in UK homes) live in tight clusters in cracks and crevices. Oriental cockroaches are more likely to be found in ground-floor, damp areas near drains. Knowing where to look room by room helps you assess the problem and prepare for treatment.

Kitchen

The kitchen is the primary harbourage for German cockroaches in UK homes. They harbour behind and inside appliances, in cracks between units and walls, and along pipe runs.

 • Behind and under the fridge — the motor and compressor area is warm and often undisturbed. Check for live bugs, droppings, and egg cases.
 • Behind and under the oven — the heat from the oven creates ideal conditions. Pull it out if possible and inspect the wall and floor behind.
 • Inside the dishwasher — check around the door seal, the motor compartment, and the drainage hose connection.
 • Around the sink — German cockroaches harbour in the gap between the worktop and wall, around pipe penetrations, and under the sink unit.
 • Inside cupboard hinges — cockroaches lay egg cases in the small sheltered space inside cabinet door hinges.
 • Behind kickboards — remove base unit kick plates and inspect the floor and wall behind.
 • Microwave and kettle — German cockroaches are known to harbour inside electrical appliances.
 • Before treatment: clean thoroughly behind all appliances, empty all cupboards, and remove items from under the sink.

Bathroom

Bathrooms provide the moisture cockroaches need. Both German and Oriental cockroaches may be found here.

 • Under the sink and around pipe runs — check for droppings and smear marks.
 • Behind the toilet — warm pipe runs and dampness attract cockroaches.
 • Inside the airing cupboard — the hot water cylinder area is warm and often undisturbed.
 • Around the bath panel — remove the panel and inspect behind.
 • Extractor fan ducting — cockroaches can enter via external vents and harbour in the duct.

Boiler Cupboard and Utility Areas

Boiler cupboards are one of the warmest spots in the home and a prime harbourage for German cockroaches. Check around the boiler itself, the pipe runs entering and leaving the cupboard, and any gaps where pipes pass through walls.

Utility rooms with washing machines and dryers provide warmth and moisture. Check behind and under appliances and around drainage connections.

Living Areas and Bedrooms

Cockroaches in living rooms and bedrooms are uncommon in mild infestations but indicate a significant problem that has expanded beyond the kitchen and bathroom.

If cockroaches are found in these rooms, check behind radiators, along skirting boards, inside electrical sockets, and behind furniture near walls. A whole-property treatment is required.

Preparing for Treatment

Good preparation significantly improves the effectiveness of professional cockroach treatment.

 • Empty all kitchen cupboards and drawers.
 • Pull appliances away from walls where possible.
 • Remove items from under sinks and from the boiler cupboard.
 • Clean thoroughly — remove all food debris, grease, and crumbs.
 • Remove bath panels and any boxing around pipework to allow access.
 • Leave the property during treatment if the technician advises (usually 2–4 hours).

After Treatment

After professional cockroach treatment, the key is to maintain the clean conditions and allow the residual treatment to work.

 • Do not clean treated areas for at least 2 weeks — the residual product needs to remain on surfaces.
 • Maintain scrupulous kitchen hygiene — see our cockroach prevention guide.
 • Attend the follow-up visit — this is essential for catching nymphs that have emerged from surviving egg cases.
 • Report any ongoing activity to your technician — they can adjust the treatment plan if needed.
